The Town of Evans Historical Society was organized on May 26, 1965 at the home or Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cook located at the corner of Erie and Holland Roads. Mr. Cook served as the first president of the Historical Society and also as Town Historian.
Throughout the years the Society participated in various community celebrations and has assisted in placing markers at historical sites in the town. Markers have been placed:
- At the Frist Church of Evans honoring Aaron Salisbury, the first permanent settler in Evans
- On Mill Street in Angola Commemorating the Angola train disaster of 1867
- At the VFW post on Erie Road recognizing Willis Carrier; air conditioning inventor
- At the Evans Center Museum recognizing Major William Dudley, teacher at the school house, who was killed in the War of 1812
- At the Pioneer Cemetery on North Main Street honoring Asa Ames an early American sculptor
- On Gold Street marking the site of the first town hall in William Wright’s store
- In North Evans, marking the site of many mills on 18 Mile Creek and the hamlet’s location along the Versailles Plank toll road

The 1857 School House Museum
The two-story brick school was built in 1857 and was known as the Town of Evans District School No. 2. For over a century the building served as an educational facility. Notable students who attended the school included Willis Carrier and Jennings Piper

How can I determine how my property is zoned?
The Zoning Map and Town Codes are available on the Town’s website. You may also wish to check with the Town’s Code Enforcement Office for confirmation.
Now that I have determined the zoning of my property, what uses are allowed in that zone?
You will be able to find that information by referring to the Town Codes for that particular zoning district.
What I would like to do on my property is not permissible according to Town Code. What now?
Please contact the Code Enforcement office to determine if there are any other options available.
I would like to divide my property. What do I need to do?
Each property is different, so it is best to call the Planning Office and explain what it is you wish to do. This will enable us to look at the particulars of your property and advise you of your next steps.
Where can I find application forms?
Please contact the Planning Office so that we may determine which application form is required and what documentations/plans you will need to submit. You may not need to provide all the listed materials depending on your particular project. Ease of process is our goal.
Where can I find copies of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan, the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) and the Lake Erie Beach Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy?
Copies may be viewed at the Town Clerk’s office. The LWRP and the Lake Erie Beach Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy can also be accessed online.
